Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are found in most foods and are necessary for good health. When we consume carbohydrates, our body breaks them down into sugars. Then through a not so simple process, the sugars lead to the production of insulin, and carbohydrates are converted to energy which our body uses to produce heat and muscle movement.

There are two different types carbohydrates: simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are made from white sugars, sugars found in fruits and milk products. Complex carbohydrates are carbs found in crackers, bread, rice, and other grain products. It is recommended that we eat the carbohydrates that give us a fuller feeling for longer, and that provide a steady flow of energy. Generally, the less processed a product is, the healthier the carbohydrate.
