Fats and Oils
Fats and oils are necessary in the process of vitamin absorption and helping fuel the body. Fats protect the nervous system tissue and contribute to the production of hormones.
Fats have received bad publicity over the years, and therefore, foods have sprung up everywhere that advertise “low-fat” or “fat free”. Many people have sought after foods containing the lowest amount of fat, seeking that as a weight loss solution. We have come to realize that fat is not the enemy.
This is not to say that, since fat is no longer the enemy, you will lose weight and become healthy by eating a high in fat diet. The enemy is, as it has always been, the overall poor diet leading to a “fat” waistline and bad health. Learning to maintain our health is the solution. In order to maintain our health, we need fat in our diet. We just need to make better choices in the amounts of calories that we consume.
There are three different types of fats: saturated fats, unsaturated fats, and trans fats. Saturated fats are the fats found in animal products, such as whole milk, cheese, and meat. Trans fats are the fats found in margarine products, bakery isles, snack isles, or any product that contains the word hydrogenated in the list of ingredients. Unsaturated fats are the fats that are healthier for us. Unsaturated fats are fats from fish like salmon and albacore both which are quite heart healthy fish. Other unsaturated fats are from oils such as olive oil and peanut oil.
